When should I pack my hospital bag?
Aim to have it packed by about 36 weeks, or earlier if you're expecting twins or have been told your baby may come early. Most babies arrive between 37 and 42 weeks, but labor can start before you expect it. If you're planning a home birth, pack one anyway in case you need to go in.
Tips from parents who've done it
- Pack two bags: one for labor, one for after the birth. Your partner can bring the second one in later.
- Put the things you'll need first, like your notes, snacks and a charger, at the top.
- Check with your maternity unit: some provide diapers or ask you to bring your own food.
- Leave valuables at home.
Questions parents ask
How many baby clothes should I pack?
For a short stay, 4 to 6 bodysuits and sleepers is plenty. Newborns can need changing several times a day, so a spare outfit or two helps.
Do I need a car seat to leave the hospital?
If you're driving home, yes: babies must travel in a rear-facing car seat that fits their weight. Fit it before the birth and practice with it.
What do I need for a cesarean?
The same bag, plus high-waisted underwear and loose clothes that don't press on your scar. You may stay a little longer, so pack an extra day of essentials.
